History / Digital Filmmaking: Douglas Herman - dherman [at] scienceleadership [dot] org

Douglas hated history when he was a kid! Sounds kind of strange coming from a history teacher, but he didn't have the epiphany that the classroom was where he belonged until he decided to leave America "for good" to wander about the world. Obviously he had a change of heart and returned to the states with a mission to affect change by motivating young people to get involved in their communities and seriously develop individual life plans. He was so moved by his experiences and interactions with young minds while teaching and revamping the photography program at Appel Farm Arts & Music Center, NJ, that he "voluntarily" decided to go back to school to earn his MAT in History and Digital Arts from Bennington College, VT.

Starting his 3rd year at SLA, and 4th in the Philadelphia public school system, Douglas brings a unique perspective to history, both modern and ancient, by utilizing media and art in understanding and developing individual relationships with history and politics. "Part of this process is getting out there and seeing the way people actually live from day-to-day in other parts of the world. While my passion and curiosity of other cultures has driven me to traverse EVERY country in the world, the past few journeys through Cuba, Turkey, Dominican Republic, and the past two summers in South Africa, have incorporated "service learning" projects with high school students from around the developed world."

Starting with a pen, then a camera and now fully embracing video, Douglas continues to travel through the developing world to create relationships with organizations, communities and individuals focused on sustainable development and micro-credit loans for people who are unable to gain access to finance. Perhaps the most important phase has been to adapt this work for the classroom through history and video curricula, and to convince his students that they are living history and have tons of opportunities to change it. Check out his media art work at http://www.dfherman.com

ROUGH CUT PRODUCTIONS/Digital Video:  Douglas is also the director of RCP-a collaborative media production team which handles all aspects of media creation with an explicit focus upon video production. Rough Cut is comprised of staff and students, both past and present, from SLA and has started to expand its reach to the developing world. You can check out RCP on Vimeo and at dfherman.com until their new site launches in the Fall.
